Colombo Magistrate Lashes Out At Bambalapitiya Police Over Arbitrary Arrests

Colombo Magistrate Mohomed Shahabdeen yesterday lashed out at the Bambalapitiya Police who produced suspects without following proper procedure and said that he would dismiss cases and aquit suspects under powers vested in him if the Police fails to adhere to legal procedure.

The Magistrate made these observations when two suspects who had been arrested in 2012 said that they have been arrested with no complaint or a hint of evidence against them.

"If any person is produced without adhering to proper legal procedure the case will be dismissed" he said warning the Police to desist from such arbitrary action.

The Magistrate using powers vested in him under s.186 of the Penal Code released the two suspects and ordered DIG Anura Senanayake to conduct an internal investigation into the conduct of the Police.
