UNP and JVP seen gaining momentum

The election results of the Western and Southern Provincial Councils so far released showed that the leadership changes effected in both United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have yielded results.

UNP has been able to win the Galle electorate and a number of votes and the percentages have increased considerably in other electorates as well, compared with 2009.

Meanwhile the results so far been released showed JVP's return as a formidable force against a significant deterioration of their voter base reflected in the North Western Provincial Council election held last year.

UNP leadership had to appoint a leadership council heeding to requests from party membership while JVP appointed Anura Kumara Dissanayaka as their new leader.
