EU Updates SL Travel Advice Ahead Of Presidential Polls

December 02, 2014

The United Kingdom has updated the Travel Advice on Sri Lanka in the backdrop of the upcoming Presidential election on 08th January 2015.

The updated travel advisory warns the Britons to avoid any political gatherings or rallies held ahead of the Presidential election, adding that political rallies and election campaigns in Sri Lanka have occasionally turned violent. It was issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The advisory also says there have been isolated incidents and disturbances elsewhere around the country and requested the British citizens to take care and "avoid demonstrations."

The statement also said that it was important to remember that the legal ruling was clearly based on procedural grounds and it did not imply any assessment by the Court of the substantive issues of designating the LTTE or of freezing LTTE funds.

“The Council has now decided to challenge some of the findings of the Court regarding the procedural grounds to list terrorist organizations under EU autonomous measures to combat terrorism, as set out in Common Position 2001/931. The effects of the Judgment are suspended until a final judgment is rendered by the Court of Justice,” it said. - See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/57875/ltte-ban-eu-to-appeal#sthash.kTgCtsrF.dpuf
