Handing Nominations For 2015 Presidential Election Commences

Nominations for the presidential election 2015 will be accepted at the Elections Secretariat today from 9.00am to 11.00am.

Most candidates including common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena have already arrived at the Elections Secretariat at Rajagiriya to hand in nominations papers. Several other candidates including President Mahinda Rajapaksa are yet to arrive.

Seventeen candidates from recognized political parties and 2 independent candidates have placed their bonds by yesterday to contest the election. The main candidates are expected to be Mahinda Rajapaksa of the UPFA and Maithripala Sirisena of the New Democratic Front.

Objections will be entertained for the nominations within a half an hour period after the handover of nominations.
