SLMC Split Over Final Stance: Announcement Due on Sunday Morning

December 27, 2014

The High Command of the SLMC, which met on Saturday evening to make a final decision on the presidential election, ended the meeting with divisions, without arriving at a concrete agreement.

Although SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem was keen on remaining with the government, many quarters of the party have raised concerns over the move. The High Command finally agreed to meet on Sunday morning and announce the final decision following the meeting.

Highly placed party sources also told Asian Mirror that the party would also consult All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, a religious body of the Muslim community, tomorrow morning before announcing the final decision.

“If a major development does not happen tomorrow morning,” a party strongman said, “the SLMC’s decision will be in favour of the incumbent.”
