Former Rajapaksa Ally LSSP To Operate Independently In Opposition

Leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party Prof. Tissa Vitharana has stated that the LSSP is not a part of the UPFA and was just a member of the UPFA government.

"Therefore," Vitharana says, "the party will remain in the parliament as an independent party". The LSSP is one among five independent opposition groups in Parliament that does not support the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna of Dinesh Gunawardene, Left Democratic Front of Vasudeva Nanayakkara, National Freedom Front of Wimal Weerawansa and Eelam People’s Democratic Party of Gouglas Devananda have also decided to remain independently in the opposition.

Meanwhile media reports said that the LSSP, the Sri Lanka Communist Party and Vasudeva Nanayakkara’s LDF was considering contesting the next general election as a separate group.

Some reports also claimed that this was a part of an alliance to bring back former president Mahinda Rajapaksa back to active politics.
