Former Navy Commander Refutes 'Gota Base' Claims

Former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda stated that according to his knowledge there was no navy camp named as “Gota Base.”

Giving an interview to a local newspaper, he asserted that those rumors about a navy camp called ‘Gota Base’ could be an attempt to discredit the good name and the image of Sri Lanka Navy.

“There was no such place as ‘Gota Base’. I think the whole story about that camp is an attempt to insult Sri Lanka Navy” Karannagoda said.

“As Sri Lanka Navy we did our part well when it came to of defeating LTTE. We destroyed eight supply ships belonging to LTTE in the deep seas, which was an outstanding achievement. We sacrificed lot and for me, it is very hard to watch these rumors spreading.” he declared.

TNA MP Suresh Premachandran claimed in February that over 700 people have been detained at a secret camp, known as “Gota Base” in the Eastern port city of Trincomalee.
