Sri Lanka Allows Dual Citizenship For Nine Countries

The new administrative procedure for the granting of dual citizenship was introduced from Monday, Minister of Public Order, Disaster Management and Christian Affairs John Amaratunga said.

Granting of dual citizenship was suspended in 2011. The new government decided to re-introduce it recently.

However this is open to Sri Lankans in nine countries only. These countries are United Kingdom, United States, Japan, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand.

The fee for the Chief Applicant will be Rs. 250,000. The fee for the spouse is Rs. 50,000 and the same fee applies for an unmarried child below 22 years of age.

Meanwhile it has been reported that around 2000 individuals were granted dual citizenship, even after it was annulled in 2011. Amaratunga said that an inquiry into this will also be carried out.
