MPs Secretly Collect Signatures For Impeachment Against Maithri: Political Volcano Ahead

The UPFA MPs who started a protest in the Parliament on Monday were collecting signatures for an impeachment motion against President Maithripala Sirisena, highly placed political sources told Asian Mirror.

Once an impeachment motion is accepted by the Speaker, the president will not be able to dissolve the parliament. An MP who was involved in the move told Asian Mirror that the Speaker cannot refrain from accepting the motion once 75 signatures are included in the motion.

The move is aimed at blocking President Maithripala Sirisena from dissolving Parliament.

However, the President arrived at the Parliament to hold discussions with party leaders to resolve the matter that had arisen in the House. It is learnt that the President himself will present the 19th Amendment to the constitution in a bid to draw the support of UPFA MPs.

The UPFA MPs backing former president Mahinda Rajapaksa launched a protest on Monday over the summoning issued to him by the Bribery Commission.

The MPs once again launched a protest this morning, preventing the debate on the 19th Amendment from taking place.
