National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa said that reconciliation cannot be promoted by commemorating the LTTE.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, he said that the LTTE was commemorated in the University of Jaffna where the map of the self-proclaimed Tamil Eelam was displayed.

While the people in the north are given the chance to commemorate the LTTE, the people of the south are not given a chance to commemorate the victory over terrorism, Weerawansa complained.

Weerawansa hit out at the Defence Secretary, saying that he is merely making statements. Just occupying a position does not do any good, Weerawansa said, adding that the armed forces made massive sacrifices to make sure the country was saved from breaking up to two parts.

National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa stated that President Maithripala Sirisena's government is hastening the formation of a pro-Rajapaksa political front by its actions.

Speaking at a meeting in Angunakolapelessa in Hambantota yesterday, Weerawansa commented on the recent arrest of Mahinda Rajapaksa's second son Yoshitha. "They can put us all in prison if they wish to. Nothing will stop us from bringing back Mahinda Rajapaksa to the country's leadership" he vowed.

Weerawansa added that the government was playing to the tune of the Tamil National Alliance. "The National Anthem is going to be sung in two languages at the Independence Day event and the event has been split into two segments at the behest of the TNA" he alleged.

Meanwhile, he also said that the military parade has been reduced to an insignificant component in the National Day celebrations.

"Any country shows its military prowess on its national day," Weerawansa claimed.

If the government stays in power for another year, the country will be in ruins, he also alleged.
