Sangakkara Misses Out On First-Class Centuries Record By 16 Runs

Former Sri Lanka national cricket team captain Kumar Sangakkara missed out on a record sixth-successive first-class century as their Division One game with Essex ended in a draw at Chelmsford. Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently playing for Surrey, missed out on joining CB Fry, Don Bradman and Mike Procter in making centuries in six successive first-class innings. Sangakkara, who made 200 in the first innings, was caught and bowled by Tom Westley for 84 after a hold-up for bad light.

It is only three days since Sangakkara’s double-century (two others made double-figures) rescued Surrey from 31 for five, and a week since he made combined 234 across two innings against Middlesex, when no other Surrey batsman scored more than 88.

The game came to an end a few minutes later when Surrey declared on 260-9.

Brief Score: Surrey 369 (Sangakkara 200, S Curran 90, Porter 4-89) and 260 for 9 dec (Sangakkara 84, Burns 50, Porter) drew with Essex 383 (Lawrence 107, ten Doeschate 53, Browne 52, Wagner 50)
