The UNP has initiated talks with the TNA to obtain its support for the alternative COPE report, absolving former Governor of Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran from responsibility in the Central Bank bond scam.
The report approved by COPE Chairman Sunil Handunnetti has already received the support of the JVP and the UPFA MPs of the committee, sources said.
Handunnetti said that the alternative report was a blatant attempt by the UNP to save Mahendran.
Talks with the TNA on supporting the alternative report have been on going from Sunday evening at the least.
The UNP has eleven members in the COPE and TNA has four. The TNA support is essential at obtaining a majoity, since the SLFP and the JVP are opposed to the alternative bill.
