UNP Stamps Its Authority In Parliament: Ananda Kumarasiri Becomes Deputy Speaker With Overwhelming Majority

The UNP stamped its authority in Parliament by ensuring the victory of its own nominee for the post of Deputy Speaker with a resounding majority in Parliament.

The UNP's nominee MP Ananda Kumarasiri became the Deputy Speaker of Parliament with 97 votes.

His contender, Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopuller, backed by the JO and the SLFP, managed to receive only 53 votes.

One vote was considered invalid.

Interestingly, none of the Rajapaksas, including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Namal Rajapaksa and Chamal Rajapaksa were present in the house when the vote was taken.
