Sources from the common opposition confirmed Asian Mirror that Western Provincial Councilor Hirunika Premachandra and her mother, Sumana Premachanda, have left the country due to “security threats”.
The Provincial Councilor and her mother, as Asian Mirror learns, are presently in Singapore.
However, sources close to her family said she would return to the country in a few days when “the dust is settled”. The family source also confirmed that Premachanda would be available for the final phase of the common opposition’s presidential campaign.
Hirunika Premachandra extended her support to the common opposition, led by Maithripala Sirisena, last Monday.
The Provincial Councilor’s move to leave the country comes in the aftermath of the revelations made by former Chairman of Kotikawatte Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha Prasanna Solangaarachchi that an armed group is attempting to kill him. Sollangaarachchi is known to be a staunch supporter of Hirunika Premachandra’s father, the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.
He alleged that armed groups were roaming Kotikawatte and Mulleriyawa areas every night in Defenders and the lives of opposition’s activists are under severe threat.
