Asian Mirror is now in a position to reveal that President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed to "review" his decision on former President Mahinda Rajapaksa being given nomination to contest from the UPFA.
The President has made this remark at a meeting held with former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on July 05, highly placed SLFP sources said.
However, the same sources added that the President did not promise to desist from giving nominations to Rajapaksa. "He only promised to review the decision. The pendulum can still swing either way, " they added.
The decision has come under criticism from certain sections of the party as some of its MPS have already decided to contest from the UNP in protest of Rajapaksa's nominations.
Rajapaksa was scheduled to sign nomination papers on July 08. Therefore, a final decision on the mater should be made within the next few days.
Meanwhile, President Sirisena has already stated that he will not give nominations to SLFP MPs who face bribery, corruption and crimimal charges. As a result, the fate of some vociferous MPs in the pro - Rajapaksa camp still hangs in the balance.
