Sri Lanka’s Safiya Yamic made history at the 4th South Asian Athletics Championships held in Ranchi, India, by clinching the gold medal in the women’s 200 metres event today (26).
She finished the race in 23.58 seconds, setting a new championship record. Her performance broke a 27-year-old record previously set by India’s P.T. Usha in 1998.
With this victory, Safiya Yamic was crowned South Asia’s fastest woman, having already won gold medals in the women’s 100 metres and the 4×100 metres relay earlier in the tournament.
She clocked 11.53 seconds in the 100 metres event, while the Sri Lankan women’s relay team secured gold with a time of 44.70 seconds.
