Jaffna has been named the number two best travel destination in the world for 2026 by the renowned travel guide, Lonely Planet.
This significant international recognition marks a major milestone for Sri Lanka, reaffirming the country’s global appeal as a destination rich in unique cultural heritage.
The rankings were officially unveiled at a media conference in Milan on October 22 during the launch of Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2026’ Italian-language edition.
The Sri Lanka Consulate General in Milan represented the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) at the launch event. In a nod to the region’s unique culture, attendees were served special dishes distinctive to the Northern Province.
The SLTPB stated that it views this prestigious accolade as a “powerful marketing tool.” The bureau expects the recognition to enhance Sri Lanka’s international attraction, significantly boost tourist arrivals, and help promote community-based tourism experiences.
