A member of the National People’s Power (NPP) representing the Hingurakgoda Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested last night (4) for allegedly threatening police officers and using criminal force inside the Hingurakgoda Police Station in an attempt to secure the release of his brother.
According to Hingurakgoda Police, the suspect, a resident of the Yatiyalpathana area, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by two employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). The workers had reportedly visited the house of the suspect’s brother to disconnect electricity due to unpaid bills when they were allegedly threatened and obstructed by the local representative, who also damaged their motorcycle.
Police said the suspect later arrived at the Hingurakgoda Police Station, where his brother was being held, and proceeded to threaten officers and use force while demanding his release.
The arrested Pradeshiya Sabha member is expected to be produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate’s Court today (5), police added.
