Police Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler announced that foreign nationals driving in Sri Lanka must strictly comply with the Motor Traffic Act, emphasising that several violations—particularly involving tourists driving three-wheelers—have recently been detected.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Police Media Division auditorium in Battaramulla, ASP Wootler outlined the legal requirements for foreign drivers.
According to the Police, foreign nationals may drive in Sri Lanka only under the following conditions:
• Valid Licence Required: A foreign national with a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) may use it to drive in Sri Lanka. Those holding a domestic driving licence issued in their home country must obtain a certificate or verification report from the Department of Motor Traffic before driving.
• Driving Restrictions: Foreigners who possess neither an IDP nor a certified domestic licence are not permitted to drive any vehicle in the country.
• Illegal Activity: The Police have observed an increase in tourists driving three-wheelers, which is strictly prohibited. Legal action has been taken against the owners of the vehicles involved in these violations.
ASP Wootler added that enforcement will continue islandwide to ensure compliance with the Motor Traffic Act and to enhance road safety.
