A special awareness walk ‘Scoliosis Walkathon 2025’ aimed at educating the public on Scoliosis, a spinal condition known locally as Pethikudaya, commenced on 23 November from the Independence Square to J.R. Jayewardene Centre in Colombo.

Organized by the Scoliosis Awareness Program and the Lions Club, the event marked the 13th consecutive year of the initiative, which primarily seeks to emphasize the critical importance of identifying the condition during its early stages to ensure effective treatment.

Medical reports indicate that approximately 2,500 patients suffering from Scoliosis have currently been identified within Sri Lanka. However, organizers at the event highlighted a concerning reality, noting that the actual number of unidentified cases across the country is likely much higher than the official recorded figures. This discrepancy underscores the urgent need for broader public awareness and proactive screening mechanisms to catch the spinal deformity before it progresses.

The walk attracted a diverse group of participants, creating a community of support that included current patients living with the condition as well as individuals who have successfully recovered. The event was attended by key advocates for the cause, including Project Director Dr. Nilmini Vithana and Gaya Upasena, the current District Governor of Lions Club International (District 306), who joined the march to show their solidarity.
