The Government has decided to allow the import of frozen vegetables that comply with the standards of the Department of Agriculture, Essential Services Commissioner General B. K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi announced.
He said District Secretaries have been instructed to publicise lists of essential food items and goods required during the ongoing disaster situation, so that difficulties faced by the public in obtaining these supplies can be identified and addressed.
Through this process, suppliers will be able to coordinate with relevant District and Divisional Secretaries to deliver the identified items swiftly.
Chandrakeerthi further noted that discussions are being arranged with Litro Gas to identify potential issues in the proper distribution of LP gas and to implement immediate solutions.
District Secretaries have also been directed to submit information received from their offices, along with data from other State institutions, to the Prime Minister’s Office to facilitate medium-term relief for affected communities.
These requirements will be presented in an easily accessible format prepared by the Prime Minister’s Office, enabling both local and international donors to clearly identify the items they can contribute.
The mechanism is expected to prevent the receipt of unnecessary items while ensuring that essential needs are properly identified and delivered to the appropriate locations.
According to the statement, goods arriving from overseas will be accepted under the Disaster Management Centre, with necessary customs duty concessions and other tax relief measures applied accordingly.
The Government expects this initiative to streamline disaster management efforts and ensure timely and effective assistance to affected communities.
