A bus transporting a group that had arrived in Nuwara Eliya to clean public spaces damaged by recent heavy rainfall met with an accident last night (6), Nanuoya Police said.

The group had travelled from Kalutara to Nuwara Eliya four days earlier to assist in clearing and cleaning the town following the severe weather. After completing their work, the bus was returning to Kalutara via the Radella shortcut route when the accident occurred.

According to police, the bus had been travelling along a steep section of the road in the Somerset Estate area when its brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then veered off course and crashed into an embankment.

A Nanuoya Police officer confirmed that no passengers were injured, though the bus sustained significant damage.

Police further stated that the driver had not been aware that heavy vehicles are prohibited on that particular route.
