Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa has requested Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya to convene Parliament immediately under Standing Order 16 to discuss the crisis caused by the recent adverse weather conditions.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Rajapaksa highlighted that the recent floods and landslides have resulted in significant loss of life and property across multiple districts. He noted that the disaster has caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including reservoirs and irrigation systems, while severely impacting sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, industries, and tourism. He further pointed out that the severe economic impact of these events cannot yet be calculated with precision.
Emphasizing the responsibility of public representatives during such catastrophes, Rajapaksa stated that the government must intervene more systematically to restore normalcy. Consequently, the SLPP has requested the Prime Minister to convene the House as soon as possible to discuss necessary measures for providing relief to the affected public. A copy of the letter has also been forwarded to the Speaker of Parliament.
