More than 36 hours have elapsed since a jeep carrying Member of Parliament and former Speaker Asoka Ranwala was involved in a collision with another vehicle in the Sapugaskanda area.

Following allegations that Ranwala was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, police moved to obtain a medical report, Police Media Spokesperson said on 12 December.

However, responding to an inquiry by News 19 website, Police Media Spokesperson’s ASP F. U. Wootler said that as of 9.30 a.m. today (13), the relevant medical report had still not been received.

The delay in obtaining the medical report, despite the significant time that has passed since the accident, has triggered sharp criticism on social media, with users questioning the conduct of the police and the enforcement of the law.

Meanwhile, the Dinamina website, operated by the state-owned Lake House institution, has reported since yesterday (13) afternoon that investigations have revealed Ranwala was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

When contacted regarding this claim, police reiterated that the only method of conclusively determining whether a person was intoxicated is through a medical report, which has yet to be made available to them.

Separately, today marks one year since Ranwala resigned from Parliament following controversy surrounding his doctoral degree.
