A police sergeant has been suspended for allegedly maintaining an improper relationship with Nandha Kumar Thakshi, a female suspect currently held under a 90-day detention order in connection with the murder of organised crime figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
Police investigations revealed that the sergeant and the suspect had established a close bond, which included splitting a single biscuit in half to share and exchanging messages via hand gestures.
The suspended officer was on sub-duty from 10.00 p.m. on the 30th to 6.00 a.m. the following day. During this shift, he was observed giving biscuits to Nandha Kumar Thakshi, who is detained in cell number 03. It is alleged she then returned a half-eaten portion of a biscuit to him.
CCTV footage and close-up analysis further confirmed that the sergeant had approached the suspect’s cell on multiple occasions to communicate using hand signals.
The Colombo District Criminal Division is currently conducting further investigations into the incident.
The suspect, Nanda Kumar Thakshi, was arrested alongside five others in a house in Kathmandu, Nepal, following the disappearance of the main suspect, Ishara Sewwandi. Thakshi reportedly bears a strong resemblance to the missing Sewwandi.
Both women are currently being held at the Colombo District Criminal Division under 90-day detention orders. Organised crime figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa was shot dead inside the Aluthkade court complex on 19 February 2025.
