Mahamaya Girls’ College in Kandy has been closed indefinitely after heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the area above the school.

The decision was taken following an inspection by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO), which assessed Raja Pihilla Mawatha and warned that the mountainous terrain overlooking the school remains at risk of further landslides, the school principal said.

Several houses and hotels located on the slope above the school pose a serious threat to the school buildings if another landslide occurs. Authorities, together with the school management, have suspended classes as a precautionary measure, prioritising the safety of students.

Meanwhile, residents and visitors in the surrounding area have been advised to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue in the Kandy region.
