A Police Constable attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station has been arrested by the Embilipitiya Divisional Crimes Investigation Bureau following a reported confrontation with Ratnapura District National People’s Power (NPP) Member of Parliament Shantha Pathma Kumara Subasingha. The officer faces several charges including criminal intimidation and wrongful obstruction. He is scheduled to be produced before court this afternoon.
The arrest follows two conflicting complaints lodged at the Kolonna Police Station regarding an incident that occurred at approximately 8.40 p.m. on 20 December near the Kalugala Temple. The Constable initially filed a complaint via the 119 emergency hotline alleging that he was assaulted by the MP and a group of individuals while returning home from his shift. He also claimed the group had forcibly taken away his motorcycle.
However, a counter-complaint was filed by Shantha Pathma Kumara Subasingha at 10.10 p.m. that same evening. The MP alleged that the officer had intentionally blocked the road with a motorcycle, stopped his vehicle, and attempted to assault him. The police subsequently recovered the motorcycle near the temple and took the officer into custody.
The Constable was first admitted to Kolonna Hospital and later transferred to Embilipitiya Hospital. According to a statement from the Police Media Division, hospital clinical records noted the odour of alcohol on the officer’s breath at the time of admission. While urine tests did not detect any narcotic substances, blood samples have been forwarded to the Government Analyst’s Department to confirm whether alcohol had been consumed.
Investigations into the matter are currently being conducted by the Embilipitiya Divisional Crimes Investigation Bureau under the direct supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police for the Embilipitiya Division.
