A National People’s Power (NPP) member of the Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested by the Mundalama Police early on 26 December 2025.

The member, who represents the Mangala Eliya ward, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by a Grama Niladhari (GN) regarding an incident of verbal abuse and criminal intimidation.

According to the complaint, the GN was on disaster relief duty on 5 December 2025 when her motorcycle was involved in a collision with a small lorry driven by the Pradeshiya Sabha member. She alleged that the member verbally abused her at the scene. She further stated that on 8 December 2025, following a disaster committee meeting, the member telephoned her and used threatening language.

The suspect surrendered to the police this morning after being summoned for the investigation. He is expected to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court today.
