Sri Lanka Police suspect that a bomb threat reported at the Kandy District Secretariat was a deliberate hoax intended to create public unrest.
In a statement issued this morning (27), Police said the Computer Crime Investigation Division has been assigned to conduct further inquiries to trace the source of the information.
The investigation follows an email received by the Kandy District Secretariat yesterday (26), claiming that explosives had been planted at five locations within the Secretariat premises.
Acting on the alert, the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Kandy Division ordered an extensive search operation. The operation involved officers from the Kandy Police Station, the Police K9 Division, the Police Special Task Force Bomb Disposal Unit, and the Sri Lanka Army Bomb Disposal Unit.
The search was conducted from morning until evening on 26 December 2025. Police said no suspicious explosive devices or materials were found following a thorough inspection of the premises.
Based on these findings, Police believe the threat was false and aimed at causing public alarm. Further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
