The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says the tri-forces, Police and relief teams have been placed on alert to respond to any emergency situation that may arise due to rainy weather expected to affect several parts of the country in the coming days.
Director General of the Disaster Management Centre Sampath Kotuwegoda said the northeast monsoon, which became active on 9 December, has further intensified at present.
According to observations by the Department of Meteorology, rainfall is likely to increase from 29 December due to a cyclonic wind circulation currently prevailing over the eastern region, he noted.
As a result, there is a higher probability of rainfall in the Northern, North Central, Central, Eastern and Uva provinces.
In view of the prevailing conditions, the Director General said the Disaster Management Centre has informed the tri-forces, Police and the Civil Defence Department to take necessary measures to minimise potential disaster impacts. Accordingly, instructions have been issued to keep additional personnel, aircraft and naval boat teams on standby for emergency relief operations.
