The Department of Meteorology said a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, located to the southeast of Sri Lanka, is very likely to move northwestwards and approach the Sri Lankan coast between Pottuvil and Trincomalee by this evening (9).
As of 6:00 a.m. today, the system was situated about 170 km east of Batticaloa. The Met. Department warned that showery and windy conditions across the island—particularly in the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central Provinces—are expected to intensify as the system moves closer.
Earlier today, the Department issued a red alert, noting that the deep depression was located about 200 km southeast of Batticaloa at around 4:00 a.m.
