The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, organised two special meditation sessions to mark the United Nations-designated World Meditation Day on 21 December 2024. The sessions, held in Colombo and Ratnapura, offered participants an opportunity to enhance their mental and physical well-being through the practice of meditation.

The first session took place at the Mayurapathy Meditation Hall in Colombo, while the second was held simultaneously at the Jethavanarama Buddhist Monastery in Kalatuwawa, Ratnapura. Both sessions saw a large turnout and were widely appreciated for their calming and transformative effects.

On 6 December 2024, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/79/L.27, officially declaring 21 December as World Meditation Day. India and Sri Lanka played key roles as part of the core group behind this resolution, recognising the positive impact of meditation on mental and physical health.

The resolution also highlights the complementary relationship between yoga and meditation, both of which are integral to promoting holistic health. The choice of 21 December for this observance holds particular significance as it marks the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere – the shortest day and longest night of the year. This natural phenomenon has long been regarded as a time for introspection and renewal, making it an ideal occasion for individuals to engage in meditation and reflect on their well-being.
