The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded statements from five doctors who treated and issued medical reports on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the National Hospital in Colombo, the Divaina newspaper reported.
According to police sources quoted in the report, the doctors were summoned to the CID over the past few days and questioned regarding medical assessments issued during that period.
The inquiry relates to an ongoing CID investigation into allegations that Wickremesinghe, during his presidency, misused state funds during an official visit to London in 2023. He was later arrested and produced before court, following which he was remanded.
While in remand custody, Wickremesinghe was admitted first to the prison hospital and subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Hospital, citing a sudden medical condition.
The CID has reportedly questioned the doctors who handled his treatment at the National Hospital to ascertain details surrounding his medical condition and the reports issued at the time.
