The Colombo District Court today issued an interim injunction preventing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) from enforcing its decision to suspend the party membership of Colombo Municipal Councillor Zohara Buhary, following allegations that she voted in favour of the National People’s Power (NPP) during the Colombo Municipal Council budget vote.
The order, issued after considering a petition filed by Buhary, will remain valid for 14 days.
The Court also issued notice to SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem and General Secretary Nizam Kariapper, who have been named as respondents, directing them to present their submissions in relation to the case.
Buhary stated that she had supported the NPP during the budget vote held on 31 December 2025, and that the party subsequently suspended her membership pending disciplinary inquiry.
However, she argued in her petition that the party’s decision to suspend her without a fair inquiry, and its refusal to accept her objections, was unlawful and discriminatory.
