Police have released further details concerning a fatal road traffic accident that took place at approximately 11.00 p.m. on 16 January near the Ilimba Junction along the Ratnapura–Panadura (A008) main road. The incident involved two motorcyclists who were allegedly racing at high speed when they collided with a car turning towards Ilimba from the opposite direction.

Both motorcyclists were initially transported to the Horana Hospital by ambulance for urgent medical attention. The 17-year-old rider was subsequently transferred to the Colombo National Hospital due to the severity of his condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The second motorcyclist, a 22-year-old youth, remains at the Horana Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

Investigations conducted by the Horana Police revealed that the deceased motorcyclist did not possess a valid driving licence. Consequently, authorities have stated that legal action will be pursued against those who aided and abetted the minor in operating the vehicle. The driver of the car, a 54-year-old local resident, was produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court and has been released on surety of Rs. 500,000 while further enquiries continue.
