Two youths were remanded until 6 February by the Horana Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for performing dangerous motorcycle stunts during a funeral procession in Horana.
Horana Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya issued the remand order against the suspects, aged 21 and 22, who are residents of the Bellapitiya area. They were arrested by the Horana Police Traffic Division for riding their motorcycles on one wheel — commonly referred to as “wheelies” — during the funeral of a 17-year-old boy.
The funeral was held for a school student who died on 17 January following a high-speed motorcycle race in the Ilimba Junction area in Horana. Police said the teenager was riding a motorcycle during an illegal race when it collided with another vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.
Despite the circumstances surrounding the death, several youths were seen engaging in reckless riding during the funeral procession, prompting police intervention.
In addition to remanding the two suspects already in custody, the Magistrate directed the Horana Police to identify and arrest all other individuals involved in performing dangerous stunts during the procession. The court further ordered that all such suspects be produced before court for legal action.
Police have reiterated that strict measures will be taken against reckless riding, particularly illegal motorcycle racing, which continues to pose a serious threat to public safety.
