A case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe under the Public Property Act is scheduled to be taken up again today (28) before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The case relates to allegations that state funds were misused during Wickremesinghe’s tenure as President to finance a trip to London for his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, to attend a university degree-awarding ceremony.
In connection with the complaint, the former President appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement on 22 August 2025. He was subsequently arrested and produced before court, following which he was remanded until 26 August.
After considering medical reports submitted to court, Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura ordered Wickremesinghe to be released on three personal bails of Rs. 5 million each. The case was then fixed for hearing on 29 October 2025.
When the matter was taken up on that date, the Magistrate directed that investigations be concluded by 28 January 2026.
