Actor Hemal Ranasinghe has been released on a surety of Ra 100,000 by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

Earlier today (3), he was arrested for allededly asaulting a person when he arrived in Wellawatte police station to provide a statement.

Ranasinghe who attended a film launch ceremony held on 8 January 2026 at the Havelock City Mall in Wellawatte has been arrested following a complaint alleging that he assaulted an advertising creative who was also present at the event.

According to the complaint, the alleged assault took place at the conclusion of the ceremony. Acting on the complaint, the Wellawatte Police Station arrested the suspect on 3 February 2026.

Police said the suspect had been informed on several occasions to appear before the police but had failed to do so. He was taken into custody when he eventually appeared at the police station through an attorney on 3 February.

The Wellawatte Police have submitted CCTV footage related to the incident to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court and reported the relevant facts to court.
