The United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are edging closer to forming a possible electoral alliance, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said.
Wijewardene noted that discussions between the two parties had reached what he described as a successful stage, with both sides engaging in constructive exchanges of views.
“Accordingly, there is an opportunity for the two parties to contest together in the upcoming election,” he said.
He added that the outcome of the ongoing round of talks with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa would be announced to the country in due course.
According to Wijewardene, both parties have agreed in principle to unite in order to deliver justice to the country and to their respective supporters. He further observed that, since the commencement of discussions, members of the UNP and SJB at village level had already begun cooperating, signalling groundwork for a joint electoral effort.
However, he clarified that discussions between Premadasa and the UNP representative had not yet centred on the allocation of positions.
