The President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Rajeev Amarasuriya, has stressed that security is the foremost concern for the public when voting for a government.

Speaking at a special media briefing on the killing of a lawyer by underworld gang members in the Akuregoda area of Pelawatte, Amarasuriya said people should be able to walk freely on the streets without fear of being shot.

He described some of the information circulating on social media about the murdered lawyer as “horrifying”.

Amarasuriya emphasised that even a criminal suspect remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and that the right to legal assistance is guaranteed to everyone under the law.
