The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, has commended the Sri Lankan Government’s efforts to stabilise the economy and navigate recent external shocks, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Division.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya met Georgieva and her delegation on 17 February at Temple Trees. During the discussions, the IMF chief praised the administration’s management of economic challenges and its response to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, which severely affected vulnerable communities. She underscored the need for targeted assistance and long-term resilience-building measures.

Amarasuriya expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continued support, particularly in the aftermath of the cyclone. She emphasised that recovery efforts must directly benefit vulnerable groups and foster inclusive growth. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of attracting sustainable investment, especially in the tourism sector.

The discussions further covered education reform, with both sides stressing the importance of aligning skills development and employability with academic knowledge to strengthen the country’s human capital base.

The meeting was attended by senior IMF officials Andreas Bauer, Krishna Srinivasan, Pierre Mejlak and Martha Woldemichael, along with Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, Deputy Governor C. Amarasekara, and senior aides to the Prime Minister.
