Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed, according to state media, following US-Israeli strikes across the country.
The announcement came after United States President Donald Trump said Khamenei had been killed in the attacks. An intelligence source and a military source told the BBC’s media partner, CBS News, that around 40 Iranian officials were killed in the strikes, including the supreme leader. Israel had earlier identified seven other officials it said were killed, without naming Khamenei at the time.
Trump said the bombing campaign would continue, describing the moment as “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country.”
In response, Iran launched attacks across the Middle East. Apparent Iranian strikes were reported in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait — locations that host US military bases or are allied to Washington.
More than 200 people have been killed across Iran, according to the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iranian authorities said at least 108 were killed when US and Israeli strikes hit a girls’ school.
