A controversy has emerged in Sri Lanka’s film industry over a planned biographical film based on the life of veteran actress Malini Fonseka, with sharp divisions surfacing between supporters of the project and those raising concerns over its impact on her legacy.

The film, titled Rajiniye, is currently in its initial stages, with preliminary discussions already held involving several senior figures in the industry. The production, backed by Cinestar Foundation Chairman Dr Jayanta Dharmadasa, is expected to draw on significant episodes from Fonseka’s life, portraying the journey of the actress widely regarded as the “Queen of Sinhala Cinema”.

While the project has generated excitement among some audiences eager to see her story brought to the screen, others have voiced concern that such a portrayal could harm her reputation if not handled with care.

Adding to the debate, veteran actor Lucky Dias has publicly opposed attempts to use Fonseka’s image and life story for what he described as narrow or self-serving purposes. In a statement shared on social media, Dias said he was compelled to speak out as the reputation of one of Sri Lanka’s most respected artistes appeared to be at risk.

He alleged that certain individuals were displaying “false affection” while pursuing personal interests, warning that similar actions in the past had led to the reputational damage of several prominent artistes.

Dias also strongly objected to the production of biographical films based on Fonseka’s life, stating that her extensive body of work was sufficient to preserve her legacy.

“Even for another 200 years, the hundreds of performances she has delivered are more than enough to keep her alive. She does not need life stories. She does not need biopics,” he said.

He further called on Fonseka’s family members and close associates to intervene and ensure that her dignity and legacy are protected, stressing that her longstanding public image should not be undermined.
