KOICA Unveils Rs. 2.4 Billion Plan to Boost Sigiriya Conservation and Tourism

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has proposed a special Rs. 2.4 billion project to enhance conservation efforts at Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and boost its tourism potential.

The project, proposed under the supervision of the Central Cultural Fund and with full approval from the Department of Archaeology, includes the following initiatives:

  1. Development of an access road to Sigiriya Rock.
  2. Construction of an alternative access road.
  3. Upgrades to facilities such as the Sigiriya Museum, canteen, and ticket counter.

As part of this initiative, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Central Cultural Fund and KOICA is expected to be signed, following the instructions of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.

A discussion regarding the project took place on 27 December at the Ministry, chaired by Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senewi. Attendees included KOICA Sri Lanka Director Myungjin Kim, Deputy Director Yong Whan Kim, Ministry Secretary A.M.P.M.B. Athapattu, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Dr. Nilan Cooray and Private Secretary to the Minister Anil Abeygunawardena, along with others.
