The Sri Lanka Police says investigations have been launched after a video showing three young women travelling dangerously on a single motorcycle without helmets sparked widespread discussion on social media in recent days.

According to Police Headquarters, investigations carried out by the Buttala Police led to the identification of the women involved as well as the registered owner of the motorcycle.

Police said the women were residents of Kolombage Ara, Hidikivula, and Unawatuna areas.

Investigations further revealed that the 23-year-old woman who was riding the motorcycle did not possess a valid driving licence.

Police stated that she is expected to face several charges, including riding without a valid driving licence, travelling without protective helmets, carrying more passengers than permitted on a motorcycle, and reckless driving.

Accordingly, the woman is scheduled to be produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (11).

Police also said legal action would be taken against the registered owner of the motorcycle for permitting an unlicensed individual to operate the vehicle.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Buttala Police.
