National Freedom front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa claims that even former State Intelligence Service chief Suresh Sallay is facing a serious threat to his life under the current political environment in the country.

He alleged that the Government’s actions had created a climate of fear and insecurity among both ordinary citizens and senior State officials.

Commenting on the recent deaths of several senior officials, Weerawansa said there was significant public suspicion surrounding incidents including the death of an Additional Director attached to the Ministry of Finance and other recent cases reported in the country.

He further stated that individuals do not resort to suicide merely because allegations have been levelled against them.

According to Weerawansa, if the legal and investigative process is carried out fairly and properly, there should be no situation in which suicides occur while investigations are ongoing.

However, he claimed that when the Government attempts to “hunt down” individuals for political purposes, those targeted are placed under severe psychological pressure.

He also alleged that even if a person such as Suresh Sallay were to be granted bail, there remained serious concerns over what could happen to him afterwards under the prevailing political climate.
