Two individuals who allegedly appeared as paid bail sureties on behalf of former Kapila Chandrasena had obtained 17 Grama Niladhari certificates between January and May 2026, the Keselwatta Police informed the Colombo Additional Magistrate’s Court today (13).

Police made the revelation while presenting a further report before Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva during proceedings related to the case.

The court ordered that three suspects, including a 76-year-old alleged intermediary accused of coordinating the two sureties, be further remanded until 20 May.

According to Police, the first and second suspects had obtained 10 and seven Grama Niladhari certificates respectively during the five-month period, and investigations were underway into the matter.

Police further stated that the third suspect, identified as the alleged mastermind behind the operation, had repeatedly arranged bail sureties from within the court premises with the assistance of prison officers.

The fourth suspect had allegedly handled arrangements required to secure bail, while investigators said the first, second, and third suspects had no personal relationship or family connection with the individual for whom bail was obtained.

Police also informed court that the person who had obtained bail in the relevant case had since died, and investigations were ongoing to determine whether the incident had any connection to the death.

Defence Counsel Sanjaya Gamage, appearing for the suspects, argued that his clients had been remanded without specific charges being clearly outlined and rejected suggestions linking the matter to a suicide investigation.

The Magistrate also directed Police to submit a comprehensive report detailing the offences allegedly committed by each suspect.
