12 hospitalised after train derails near Wanawasala

A train travelling from Polgahawela to South Kalutara derailed between Wanawasala and Hunupitiya in the early hours of today (16), causing one compartment to overturn and leaving 12 passengers with minor injuries.

Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said the injured passengers had been admitted to private hospitals located near the site of the accident, while one injured passenger had been transferred to the National Hospital of Colombo.

The train had departed Polgahawela at around 3.25 a.m. and was travelling towards South Kalutara at the time of the derailment.
