The Government will immediately call for a report from the relevant ministry regarding reports that the Lanka Sugar Company recorded a loss of Rs. 3.193 billion in 2025, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Responding to questions raised by journalists during the Cabinet decisions media briefing on Monday, Jayatissa said the Government would look into the matter and verify the figures.

Journalists questioned whether the opening of new Lanka Sugar Company sales outlets was justified at a time when the state-owned enterprise had reportedly been recording continuous losses, and whether management weaknesses had contributed to the company’s financial decline.

In response, Jayatissa said it would be impossible to repay the country’s debt using the revenue generated by the sugar company and stressed that the reported losses would be examined carefully with accurate financial data.

He acknowledged that he did not have the specific information and figures relating to the company’s financial performance at hand during the media briefing.

However, the Minister noted that several state-owned enterprises had improved their financial performance under the current administration and had begun moving from loss-making positions towards break-even levels and profitability.

He added that the Government would obtain a detailed report from the relevant ministry before making any conclusions regarding the Lanka Sugar Company’s reported losses.
