Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Tuesday after appearing before the Commission to provide a statement.

Rajapaksa had earlier arrived at the Bribery Commission in response to a summons issued in connection with an ongoing investigation into his recruitment and service in the Sri Lanka Navy, including his participation in a Royal Navy training programme in the United Kingdom.

The investigation relates to several complaints received by the Commission regarding his enlistment in the Sri Lanka Navy in December 2006 and allegations that certain educational qualifications and foreign training opportunities may have been granted outside established procedures.

Officials have launched the inquiry under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act. Following the recording of his statement, Rajapaksa was taken into custody by CIABOC officers.
